E. Primitive Jazz This dance form stemmed from early African Folk Dances, which were done by slaves, brought to America from Africa, West Indies, Cuba, Panama and Haiti.
Early Jazz Received its roots from the music of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Dances included the Two-Step or Cakewalk, and later became the Grizzly Bear, Bunny Hug, Turkey Trot, and Texas Tommy. These evolved into the fast music and dances of the 1920’s, the One-Step, Lindy Hop, Charleston and Black Bottom.
Musical Comedy or Theatre Jazz From the 1930’s through the 1940’s Musical Comedy or Theatre Jazz became very popular because of Movies and the Theatre. Many dance forms were incorporated in the use of Musical Comedy Jazz. Ballet with “On Your Toes”, Modern Dance was used in “Oklahoma” and “Brigadoon”. During the 1950’s and 1960’s dance became a very integral part of telling the story in Musical Theatre. Such musicals as “Flower Drum Song”, “Destry Rides Again”, “West Side Story” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, illustrates this. In 1978 the musical “Dancing” showed that the songs and book were secondary to the dancing; in fact, they are almost non-existent.
Contemporary Jazz Primarily performed to music of the day, it began in the late 1950’s to the music of Contemporary Jazz musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum and Dave Brubeck.
Jazz Dance - Today, Jazz Dance may be danced in many different styles and tempos, using themes based on Afro-Cuban, Oriental, Spanish or other national themes. It may be performed as a character, such as Cowboy, Sailor, Clown, etc. It may also be abstract in nature. Lyrical Jazz, performed to such music as Bette Midler's, Wind Beneath My Wings, may be included in the Jazz Dance discipline, as well as Modern Dance. Other contemporary IDO disciplines, such as Hip-Hop, Disco, Break Dance and Electric Boogie may be incorporated but must never dominate.
F. The entire routine must consist of Jazz work. Jazz technique, turns, jumps isolations, stretch, as well as use of port de bras, legs, upper body. Timing and rhythm will be considered in marking. Suitable footwear must be worn.
G. Acrobatic tricks that are integral parts of the routine are permitted but will not enhance the dancers score. These tricks could detract from the score if they are not performed technically correct.
H. Lip-Sync in any form is not permissible, however, personal interpretation of feeling or emotion is permitted.
I. Stage props are permissible when carried by the dancer/s in one trip. Stagehands are not allowed to carry props for the dancers.
J. The dancer/s cannot use liquids or other substances that can litter the dance floor.
K. In children’s category, lifts are forbidden. Lifts are defined as those figures performed with the help of another dancer or person, when the dancer’s both feet leave the dance floor

AGE DIVISIONS
The following age divisions will be used in all IDO Events:
• Children, 11& Under
• Juniors, 12 15
• Adults (1), 16 & Over
The dancer's age is determined by the year of birth as it falls within the calendar year of the competition. In the case of duos or couples, the eldest partner governs the age division. A partner no more than two years younger than the lower age limit, may dance in an older division and the age span cannot exceed three years. Example: One dancer is 10 and one is 13, they may dance in the junior division but if the younger is only 9 they may not. In the case of groups and formations, all dancers must fall within the age division and no one must be younger or older than the specified ages.
As long as a Junior World is the reigning Junior World Champion and at the same time is too old to be able to defend his or her Junior title next year, he or she will have the right to participate as a "wild card," in the adult category, in that discipline. The same will be true for the Children's division.
